Why Public Art Matters:
Cities gain value through public art – cultural, social, and economic value. Public art is a distinguishing part of our public history and our evolving culture. It reflects and reveals our society, adds meaning to our cities and uniqueness to our communities. Public art humanizes the built environment and invigorates public spaces. It provides an intersection between past, present and future, between disciplines, and between ideas. Public art is freely accessible.
Our public arts vision:
Phase 1.
Document all public art in the city of Craig and Moffat County. Engage collaboration with the City of Craig and other entities to develop a public art map and searchable listings.
Phase 2.
Coordinate with local businesses for the creation of an Art Alley/s in the downtown area. Coordination would include placement of murals, installations, and sculptures in addition to fundraising to initiate and sustain the program. Funds will be spent on materials and payments to the artists. If need be, funds can be allocated for the prep work of the local business wall and restoration /touch-up work if the piece needs repair and/or maintenance.
Phase 3.
Create an application/contract process for artist to submit pre-sketches/conceptual drawings to be awarded mural, sculpture, and/or installation bid. Coordinate with the artist on location of piece to be developed, as well as, materials and equipment needed. Time frames will be set for project completion.
Phase 4.
Once projects are completed and inventory of materials and equipment will be documented. The purpose of this initiative is to provide creative space for artists and to beautify the downtown area. The Art Alley will create value to the local businesses and will help engage and attract visitors to the downtown area.
